A cooperative housing association (also known as a housing cooperative or co-op) is a legal entity that owns and manages a residential property, where individuals can purchase shares to become members of the cooperative rather than directly buying individual units. When someone becomes a shareholder in the co-op, they are granted the right to lease a specific unit in the building or property, but they do not own the unit outright. Instead, they own a portion of the entire building or development through their shares in the cooperative.
